Supporting Physical Development: How Nannies Can Plan Indoor Activities for Children in the UAE

how nannies can plan indoor activities for children

Why Indoor Movement Matters for Children in the UAE

Living in the UAE means families often have to adjust their routines around the heat. With high temperatures for much of the year, indoor play becomes not just an option but a necessity. But just because play moves indoors, that doesn’t mean children should miss out on physical movement.

In fact, being active is essential for a child’s overall growth. It helps build strength, balance, coordination, and confidence. Physical activity also supports emotional wellbeing and brain development. For many families in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, nannies and caregivers are central to creating safe and engaging indoor routines that keep children moving, learning, and happy at home.

What Physical Development Looks Like in the Early Years

Children grow through movement. During the first few years of life, they are developing two key areas:

  • Gross motor skills like crawling, climbing, running, and balancing
  • Fine motor skills like grasping small objects, cutting with scissors, or buttoning a shirt

They are also learning how to move their bodies through space, which builds coordination and confidence. Each age group has its own set of developmental milestones. Toddlers might be working on stacking blocks, while five-year-olds are learning how to hop or skip.

When outdoor play is limited, the right kind of indoor activity can still help children meet these milestones. All it takes is some space, creativity, and thoughtful planning from their caregiver.

What Makes A Good Indoor Activity Plan

A well-rounded activity plan doesn’t need to be complicated. It simply needs to be thoughtful. A typical session might start with a gentle warm-up, move into a focused activity, and end with a quiet wind-down to help children regulate their energy.

Good plans mix energetic play with calmer tasks that build focus. Safety is always a priority. Caregivers should choose soft areas free from clutter, and use age-appropriate materials. A consistent routine also helps children know what to expect each day, which brings a sense of calm and comfort.

Every child is different, so a great caregiver tailors each plan to suit a child’s age, energy levels, and interests.

Indoor Activities That Build Gross Motor Skills

You don’t need a big space to get children moving. Here are some simple and fun ideas that work well in most homes:

  • Build an indoor obstacle course using pillows, tunnels, and boxes
  • Play balloon catch or soft ball toss to improve coordination
  • Try simple jumping games using taped lines or rugs as markers
  • Host a dance party or play follow the leader with music
  • Introduce child-friendly yoga poses to stretch and balance

These activities encourage large movements that are vital for strength, stamina, and spatial awareness.

Activities That Strengthen Fine Motor Skills

Fine motor activities are just as important and can be done using materials already at home. Here are a few ideas:

  • Use puzzles, blocks, or stacking cups
  • Play sorting games with coloured buttons or small toys
  • Set up simple arts and crafts like drawing, threading beads, or paper cutting
  • Fill a container with rice or sand and hide small items for a sensory treasure hunt
  • Let children help in the kitchen with tasks like stirring or pouring (with supervision)

These hands-on tasks help children develop control, precision, and creativity.

Tailoring Plans for Different Ages

Each stage of childhood brings different needs. Here’s how a caregiver can adjust indoor plans based on age:

  • Toddlers aged one to three do best with crawling games, stacking toys, and sensory bins filled with textures to explore
  • Preschoolers aged three to five can enjoy hopping games, mini obstacle courses, and tracing or drawing activities
  • Children aged five to eight are ready for movement routines, beginner yoga, and more structured group games

Caregivers from CloudNine Kids are trained to understand these age groups and know how to build daily schedules that meet children where they are.

How to Keep Indoor Play Fun and Engaging

Children learn best when they are having fun. Here are some ways caregivers can make sure indoor movement stays exciting:

  • Create themed adventures like a pirate treasure hunt or jungle animal safari
  • Use music, scarves, and colourful props to add a creative twist
  • Change the routine each week to bring something new
  • Let children help choose the next activity to give them a sense of ownership

These small touches help keep play fresh, fun, and meaningful.

Staying Safe During Indoor Movement

Even in a familiar home environment, safety matters. Caregivers should:

  • Choose clear spaces away from furniture with sharp edges
  • Use soft mats and age-safe equipment
  • Keep toys clean and well organised
  • Watch closely during active play to prevent accidents
  • Teach basic rules like no running indoors and taking turns

These simple steps help prevent injury while allowing freedom to explore and move.
