Moving is Emotional for Kids, Even When It is Necessary

Whether you are moving to a new apartment in Dubai, changing jobs, or enrolling your child in a new school in Abu Dhabi, big changes can feel overwhelming for little ones.

Children might not have the words to explain how they feel, but they notice when their environment shifts. Some may become quiet or clingy. Others act out or struggle to sleep. In many expat households across the UAE, relocation is a regular part of life, but that does not make it any easier for children to process.

The good news is that with the right preparation and emotional support, kids can adjust in healthy, positive ways. CloudNine Kids is here to help families in Dubai and Abu Dhabi manage these changes with confidence, providing trained caregivers who understand what children need during times of transition.

What Moving Feels Like for Children

A move can bring excitement, but also confusion or sadness. Leaving a familiar home, routine, or school means leaving behind friends, teachers, and the comfort of the known.

Parents might notice changes in mood or behavior such as:

  • Clinginess or separation anxiety
  • Irritability or emotional outbursts
  • Difficulty sleeping or changes in appetite
  • Regression to younger behavior (like thumb sucking or baby talk)

Instead of brushing off their feelings with phrases like “You will make new friends” or “It is not a big deal,” it is important to listen and validate their emotions.

Preparing Your Child Before the Move

The earlier you involve your child in the moving process, the better. Here are a few simple but meaningful steps:

  • Talk to your child in advance about why you are moving and what to expect
  • Show them photos of the new home or take them on a visit if you can
  • Let them help pack their toys or choose something for their new room
  • If changing schools, talk about new opportunities and highlight the positives

During this time, a familiar babysitter or nanny can offer extra reassurance by keeping things predictable when everything else feels uncertain.

After the Move: Bring Familiarity Into the New

Once you have settled into your new home, focus on reestablishing daily routines as quickly as possible. Children feel safest when they know what comes next.

Stick to familiar meal times, playtime, and bedtime. Make sure your child has access to their comfort items, whether that is a favorite teddy bear, blanket, or storybook.

CloudNine Kids caregivers are trained to help keep routines consistent, giving parents space to manage the move while ensuring children feel calm and secure.

Adjusting to a New School or Neighbourhood

School transitions can be especially tough. To ease this change:

  • Visit the new school together before the first day.
  • Meet the teacher or walk the school grounds if allowed.
  • Encourage participation in fun after school clubs or community events.
  • Speak with the school about how they support new students.

For expat families, adjusting to a new culture or language may also be part of the challenge. Be patient and give your child time to find their place.

Encouraging Emotional Expression

Your child may not always open up with words, but you can help them express feelings through drawing, roleplay, or simply spending quality time together.

Avoid pushing positivity too soon. It is okay to miss old friends or feel nervous in a new place. Let them know these feelings are valid and temporary.

CloudNine Kids caregivers use play based care, active listening, and gentle encouragement to support emotional wellbeing during periods of change.

When You Might Need Extra Help

If your child continues to show signs of distress after several weeks, such as persistent sadness, sleep troubles, or social withdrawal, it might be time to speak with a pediatrician or child counsellor.

At CloudNine Kids, our team includes experienced professionals who understand the emotional needs of children and know how to guide them with sensitivity.
